“What?” asked Jessica. “You've seen him? Where?”
“I was on the 5th floor
convenience store,” said 7ollion. “In that back room with all of
the quantum boxes that Richard invented. Brilliant invention by the
way. Anyway, I had just put the finishing touches on my time system
for Danada. So I had went over there to make calendars and clocks and
things, using those boxes so I didn't have to waste a whole floor or
room on them. Speaking of which, here, have a watch everyone.” He
handed a wristwatch to each of the others.
“These numbers are
upside-down,” said Charles. “The twelve goes at the top not the
bottom. Or the zero as you have, I guess.” There was indeed a zero
at the bottom, and the numbers were numbered in base twelve with a
single digit for ten and eleven, like they were in the elevator.
“Well, I didn't pay much
attention to clocks before,” admitted 7ollion. “I just knew there
were twelve hours in a day, so I went with that.”
“Twenty-four,” said
Stephanie.
“Then why are there only
twelve numbers on a clock?” asked 7ollion.
Nobody knew the answer to
that.
“Anyway,” said
7ollion. “There's twelve now.”
“Also the numbers are
backwards,” said Josephine.
“Yeah you already told
me that,” said 7ollion.
“No, I mean your hands
are rotating the wrong way. They're going counterclockwise.”
“By definition, it's
going clockwise,” said 7ollion. “It's the way that a clock goes.
Specifically this clock. Anyway, I was making these watches and other
clocks and calendars, when I see from the corner of my eye a
movement. I look and it's Toaster-Man; he's taking a couple of the
boxes, Dan only knows for what. He noticed that I saw him and ran
away, taking the elevator before I could catch him.”
“He must be on one of
the undefined floors,” said Charles.
“Yeah, but which one?”
asked Jessica.
“Probably the one that
was assigned to him,” said Samantha.
“Then why would he be so
secretive about it?” said 7ollion. “No, he's definitely hiding
something, maybe we can figure out what. Jessica, have you searched
his room?”
“Yeah he wasn't there
when I checked,” Jessica replied.
“No, I mean
searched his room for clues,” said 7ollion. “Let's go over there.
Maybe we can find something you missed the first time.
